The SS16 is a major road reaching from the north to south of Italy along the Eastern, Adriatic, coastline. Such a busy road would not initially seem a spot of immense beauty. So if you drive from San Vito Chietino in a southward direction along the coast down to Fossacesia, and then inland, up to the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere you will witness some quite spectacular coastal views over the famous Trabocchi. I had better start by explaining what a Trabocco is. They are wooden fishing huts sat on stilts about 50 meters into the water and the only way to get to them is via a wooden bridge. These days they are used as fish restaurants (some spectacular food) and do not forget to book! You can park the car just before reaching the Abbey and walk up. The Abbey, dating back to the 12th Century is well worth a visit, have an ice-cream afterwards at the coffee shop next door, then walk along the cliff’s edge to the end of the path which overlooks the gulf. The sea view is undisturbed and from this high point looking down to the coastline, there are numerous Trabocchi. This point seems to be a suntrap; it is always a few degrees warmer there, or maybe it is my imagination. LOCATION
