LA SQUILLA- The unique Christmas event in Lanciano
In Lanciano Christmas starts on the 23th December when all the locals celebrate the traditional event of “La Squilla” which takes its origins from 1607, when the Archbishop of the town started the pilgrimage from the centre of the town to the little Church of Iconicella( in the outskirts of Lanciano) to commemorate the walk of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. Each year at 6pm when the bell up on the Civic Tower starts ringing, people from all over the town go to Iconicella’s Church where they commemorate this religious event. At 7pm everybody goes back home to give their family Christmas wishes. In Lanciano the 23rd December means “Home”, when all the church bells start ringing together and everybody in the family, even the ones who live outside Lanciano, gather in one house and celebrate Christmas, unwrapping the Christmas gifts and eating the traditional food like Crispelle and Tarallucci. This characteristic celebration is deep rooted in the people of Lanciano.
La Squilla marks the start of the festivities in Lanciano and symbolises for its people the true values of Christmas: family love, solidarity and friendship.
